Chapter 14
“That went better than I expected,” Xandra says.
“What did you expect?” Dagda asks.
“Blood, magic, Grandpa lying on the ground in agonizing pain.”
Dagda’s eyebrows rise. “By my hand or yours?”
Xandra replies honestly. “By whichever of the three of us he managed to piss off first.”
I chuckle. “I have been tempted a time or two, I must admit.”
She snorts. “Who hasn’t?”
Touching back on one the thing which irritated him during the discussion, Dagda says, “I find it interesting you use such a familiar term when referring to the Witch since you clearly dislike him.” Is that hurt in his eyes? I dare say it is. Xandra has never referred to him as father or any variation of the word.
Xandra sees the jealousy and hurt as well and tries to make light of it. “Only because he hates to be called Grandpa. He suggested once I call him by a more formal title, but I like irking him this way.”
Dagda relaxes back into his chair and smiles. “It is the little things in life that make us happy.”
“Xandra? Are you in there?” her mother’s voice asks through the door.
“Yes. Come on in.”
Her mother floats through the wood. “I heard you were back. Did your grandfather accompany you?”
Xandra’s response is lackluster. “Yes.”
Scowling, her mother asks, “Are the two of you having trouble again?”
Did she expect a magical transformation of their relationship? Even Xandra’s magic is not capable of such a thing. “No more than usual,” I say, reminding her that this is the status quo for her father and daughter.
“Has he already been shown upstairs?” Julienne asks.
“Yes,” Dagda replies, taking offense at being ignored in his own office.
Still ignoring him, the ghost turns to float out the door. “I should check on him, then.”
Xandra stops her. “Um, Mom. He didn’t come alone.”
Not understanding the implication, her mother says, “It’s reasonable for him to bring along a member or two of his security force, Xandra.”
Bristling at the rebuff, Xandra snarks, “I know that. I wasn’t talking about security.”
Her mother stares at her in confusion for a moment before Xandra’s meaning sinks in. “Who is she?” she finally asks.
Even though Xandra started the conversation, the fact that her lips refuse to move tells me she is not able to finish it. I fill in the blanks for her mother. “It seems your father has become exceptionally close to a member of his Witan. She is the replacement of his former Seductress.”
Now, Julienne is pissed. “The stupid jackass,” she exclaims in a fit of ire. “Has he no sense whatsoever?” Dagda chuckles outright while I try to stifle mine. She is my mother-in-law, after all.
“I wanted you to know before you saw them together,” Xandra explains.
Face puckered in anger, her mother says, “I appreciate that. If you’ll excuse me, I have a few things to discuss with my father.”
When her mother is gone, Xandra asks, “Want to come with me to get the Giants?”
I know what my answer needs to be, but it is difficult to get the words past my lips.
